Boeing 787

17 Jan 2013

Akbar Al Baker on the problems with Boeing's 787 Dreamliners: "Qatar Airways is going to buy 60 787's and our current order of 30 is for 787-800s and it will be followed up by the option we have to convert the -8's into the -900s, which we are going to exercise. It is a great worry (to buy such a new aircraft with so many new technologies) and we are learning from this, we are already having several problems with the delivered aeroplanes. To an extent an airline can digest those problems, but we cannot of course accept if the problems are persisting and are major problems. Up to now Qatar Airways has had a couple of major problems but we are going to overcome them."

12 Dec 2012

Qatar Airways grounds one of its Boeing Dreamliner 787s, due to an electrical fault. "One of our Dreamliners has the same problem that the United plane had and I am very disappointed in Boeing. We will demand compensation (from Boeing)... we are buying planes from them to use them, not to put in a museum." said Akbar Al Baker, Qatar Airways' CEO.

7 Mar 2012

Akbar Al Baker unveils the business class seats in the Boeing 787 at the ITB Berlin travel show: "It's so special because it is a first class seat being sold as business class. It is the widest business class seat of any airline. And it has features which is only unique to Qatar Airways. This will operate on our Boeing 787 Dreamliners and wherever the Dreamliner goes the seat goes. It has many feature (1) during takeoff the armrest goes down in order to enable you get to out of the seat immediately in case of an aborted takeoff or an emergency during takeoff or landing, (2) it is fully horizontal, so you can just press a button and let it go to bed mode, and (3) there is a feature by which both the armrests go down giving you additional width across the seat. The seat is good for a person of the hight of 6 foot 4 inches. It has the largest table of any business class seat in an aircraft. You have the largest screen of any aircraft in business category of any airline in the world. Then it has a lot of details that we offer to our passengers. It has a feature so that you can store your shoes. In addition it has a storage for water, for the headsets, it has storage over here for the laptops, it has wifi connection here, it also has a usb point so that you can bring your own movies and watch them on the aircraft, and you will be able to install your ipod. This has a touchscreen controller for the ifv, in addition to the touchscreen on the television screen. It has reading lights, magazine rack, I don't think there is anything left in the requirement for a passenger for the most comfortable flight they can have, and that is all that it is about - the business class seat of Qatar Airways 787 Dreamliner."
